Not sure which service you need?

Your Water Line Is Your Responsibility

In most Maryland jurisdictions, the homeowner is responsible for the water service line from the meter to the house. The utility company owns and maintains the main in the street and the meter itself. Everything on your side of the meter is yours to maintain and repair. When that line fails, the utility company won’t fix it. You need a plumber.

According to the EPA, homes built before 1986 are more likely to have lead pipes, fixtures, and solder, and the agency has set the maximum contaminant level goal for lead in drinking water at zero. Under the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements finalized in 2024, the EPA now requires water systems to complete 100 percent replacement of lead service lines within 10 years.

Bailey Bros. Plumbing & Drain Services handles water line repair, water line replacement, and water main installation for residential properties across Central Maryland. We work on the homeowner’s side of the line, from the meter to the point of entry at your home. Every job is led by a licensed Master Plumber with 28 years of experience and backed by a 1-year labor warranty. Financing is available through Wisetack.

Signs Your Water Main Is Failing

Low Water Pressure Throughout the Whole House

If pressure is low at every fixture, not just one faucet, the problem may be in the water service line. A corroded pipe, a partial collapse, or sediment buildup inside the line can restrict flow before it ever reaches your home. If the issue is inside the house rather than the service line, repiping may be the solution.

Wet Spot in the Yard That Won't Dry Out

A soggy area along the path between the street and your home, especially one that stays wet when the rest of the yard is dry, is a strong indicator of an underground water line leak. You may also notice grass that's greener or taller in one strip compared to the rest.

Muddy or Discolored Water From the Tap

If muddy water appears at all fixtures and doesn't clear after running for a few minutes, the water service line may have a crack or break that's allowing soil into the pipe.

Water Bill Spike With No Change in Usage

An unexplained jump in your water bill often means water is leaving the system before it reaches your fixtures. If the meter is running when nothing in the house is on, the leak is between the meter and your home.

No Water in the House

A complete loss of water can mean a water main break, a frozen water line in winter, or a shutoff valve failure. If your neighbors have water and you don't, the problem is on your side of the meter. This is a plumbing emergency.

Water Surfacing Around the Foundation

If water is pooling near your foundation or seeping into the basement from outside, a leaking water service line close to the house may be the cause. Left unaddressed, this can undermine the foundation and create conditions for mold growth inside.

Water Line Services We Provide

Water Line Repair

A localized leak or break doesn’t always require a full replacement. If the damage is isolated and the rest of the line is in good condition, a targeted repair restores service without replacing the entire run. We excavate to the failure point, make the repair, pressure test the connection, and backfill.

Water Line Replacement

When the service line is corroded throughout, made of polybutylene or lead, or has multiple leak points, full replacement is the right call. We remove the old line and install a new one from the meter to the house using materials rated for underground service.

Water Main Installation

New construction, additions, or properties that need a larger water supply may require a new water main installation. We size the line, obtain permits, excavate the trench, install the main, connect to the meter, and handle the inspection.

Trenchless Water Line Replacement

When feasible, trenchless methods allow us to install a new line without excavating the entire yard. It reduces landscaping damage, shortens the timeline, and often costs less than traditional excavation. Not every property qualifies, but we assess feasibility and recommend the best approach.

Why Bailey Bros. for Water Line Work

Excavating a yard is expensive and disruptive. We use leak detection equipment and pressure testing to confirm the location and extent of the problem before we break ground. No guesswork. No unnecessary digging.

Licensed Master Plumber on Every Job

Water line work involves permits, inspections, and coordination with utility providers. Our Master Plumber with 28 years of experience manages the entire process, from permit to pressure test, so the job passes inspection the first time.

Trenchless When Possible

If your property qualifies, trenchless methods save your landscaping, your driveway, and your budget. We assess every job for trenchless feasibility before recommending traditional excavation.

Lead Line Replacement Protects Your Family

The EPA has set the safe level of lead in drinking water at zero, and federal regulations now require water systems to work toward full lead service line replacement. If your home has a lead water line, replacing it protects your health and your home’s value.

Financing Available

Water line replacement is a significant investment. Financing through Wisetack lets you get the job done now and pay over time, so a failing water line doesn’t become a bigger problem while you wait.

What to Expect From a Water Line Project

When you call about a water line issue, we start by understanding what you’re experiencing: low pressure, no water, a wet spot in the yard, or a spike in your water bill. This helps us arrive with the right equipment.

On-site, we assess the situation using pressure testing and leak detection to confirm the location and severity of the problem. For repairs, we excavate to the failure point, make the fix, pressure test the connection, and backfill. Most spot repairs are completed in one day.

For full replacements, we map the route from the meter to the house, obtain the necessary permits, and schedule the work. Excavation, pipe installation, connection to the meter, pressure testing, and inspection are all part of the scope. Most residential water line replacements take 1 to 3 days. We coordinate with your utility provider if meter-side work is needed.

For new construction projects requiring a new water main installation, we work from the building plans to size the line, coordinate the water tap with the utility, and install the main before the foundation is poured. We handle permits and inspections throughout.

Water Line Questions

How much does water line repair cost in Maryland?

Cost depends on the depth of the line, the location of the failure, whether it’s a spot fix or full replacement, and the material being used. We provide upfront pricing after assessment. Financing is available through Wisetack.

Cost varies by the length of the run, the depth of the trench, the pipe material, and any obstacles like driveways or sidewalks in the path. We provide a detailed estimate before any work begins.

Most residential replacements take 1 to 3 days depending on the length of the run and site conditions. We give you a realistic timeline during the estimate.

In most Maryland jurisdictions, the homeowner is responsible from the meter to the house. The utility company owns the water main in the street and the meter. We work on the homeowner’s side.

In some cases, yes. Trenchless methods reduce excavation. Not every property qualifies, but we assess feasibility and recommend the best approach.

Replacement is strongly recommended. The EPA has set the safe level of lead in drinking water at zero, and federal regulations now require full lead service line replacement. We remove lead lines and replace them with safe, modern materials.

Standard homeowners insurance typically does not cover the cost of replacing the line itself. However, if a water line burst causes damage inside your home, the resulting water damage may be covered. We provide documentation for claims.
