The Pipes Behind Your Walls May Be the Biggest Problem in Your Home

According to U.S. Census data, the five counties we serve contain over 1.1 million homes, with median construction dates ranging from 1948 in Baltimore City to 1989 in Howard County. A significant share of that housing stock was built during the era of galvanized steel, lead solder, and polybutylene, all materials with documented failure histories.

he EPA confirms that homes built before 1986 are more likely to have lead pipes, fixtures, and solder, and that there is no safe level of lead in drinking water. If your home was built during those decades and you’re experiencing recurring plumbing problems, the pipes themselves are likely the cause.

Bailey Bros. Plumbing & Drain Services provides whole house repiping using modern PEX or copper piping designed to last for decades. Our approach is minimally invasive, and we work to limit disruption to your walls, floors, and daily routine. Every job is led by a licensed Master Plumber with 28 years of experience and backed by a 1-year labor warranty. Financing is available through Wisetack.

Signs You Need Repiping

Low Water Pressure Throughout the Entire House

If pressure is low at every fixture, not just one faucet, the problem is likely inside the pipes. Corroded galvanized pipes narrow over time as rust and mineral deposits build up on the interior walls, choking the flow before it reaches your fixtures. If the issue is in the service line from the street, water line repair may be the solution instead.

Discolored Water From Both Hot and Cold Taps

If both hot and cold water are brown or orange, the pipes are corroding from the inside. If only the hot water is discolored, the water heater may be the source. When it's both taps, the supply pipes are the problem.

Pinhole Leaks in Multiple Locations

One pinhole leak is a spot repair. Multiple pinhole leaks across different parts of the house mean the entire system is corroding. Chasing individual repairs at this point costs more over time than replacing the whole system.

Gray Plastic Pipes in a Home Built Between 1978 and 1995

You likely have polybutylene piping, a material known to fail without warning. Poly-B deteriorates from the inside out when exposed to chlorine in municipal water. Proactive replacement before a failure prevents the water damage that comes with a burst.

Recurring Plumbing Repairs That Never Solve the Problem

If you keep paying for repairs throughout the house and the problems keep coming back, the pipes themselves are the root cause. A full system assessment determines whether repiping is the more cost-effective long-term solution.

Home Was Built Before 1960 and Still Has Original Pipes

Galvanized steel pipes from the pre-1960 era are well past their useful life. Lead solder on copper joints from the same era is a health concern. If your home's plumbing has never been updated, repiping eliminates decades of accumulated risk.

Pipe Materials We Replace

Polybutylene Replacement

Installed in millions of homes between the late 1970s and mid-1990s, polybutylene deteriorates from the inside when exposed to chlorine in municipal water. Failures are sudden and unpredictable. Many homes in Dundalk, Essex, Middle River, Glen Burnie, Columbia, and other Baltimore-area subdivisions still have Poly-B in the walls. We remove it and replace it with PEX or copper.

Galvanized Pipe Replacement

Standard in homes built before the 1960s, galvanized steel corrodes from the inside over decades, restricting flow, discoloring water, and eventually developing leaks. Common in older homes across Baltimore City, Towson, Annapolis, and established Harford County neighborhoods. We remove galvanized systems and replace them with modern materials.

Lead Pipe Replacement

Found in some of the oldest homes in the Baltimore area, particularly in Baltimore City and inner-ring suburbs. Lead is a serious health concern with no safe exposure level. If your home has lead service lines or interior lead piping, replacement is not optional.

CPVC Replacement

Commonly used from the 1980s through the 2000s, CPVC becomes brittle over time, cracking at fittings, joints, and anywhere the pipe was stressed during installation. If your CPVC is failing at multiple points, whole house repiping is more cost-effective than chasing individual cracks.

What a Repiping Project Looks Like

A repiping project starts with a thorough assessment. We inspect the existing pipe material, evaluate the condition of the system, document the fixture count and layout, and determine whether PEX or copper is the better fit for your home.

Once the scope is set, we provide a detailed estimate with upfront pricing. The work typically takes 2 to 5 days depending on the size and layout of the home. We shut off water in sections as we work so you’re not without water for the entire project. We open walls only where necessary, run the new lines, connect to every fixture, pressure test the system, and patch all access points when we’re done.

For homes with polybutylene, we remove the old Poly-B completely rather than leaving it in the walls. For homes with galvanized pipes, we remove the corroded pipe and replace it section by section. For homes with lead piping, we remove all lead and replace it with safe, modern materials. Every repiping job is inspected, pressure tested, and backed by a 1-year labor warranty.

Repiping Questions

How much does repiping cost in Maryland?

Cost depends on the size of the home, the number of fixtures, the pipe material chosen, and how accessible the existing plumbing is. We provide a detailed estimate after assessing your home. Financing is available through Wisetack.

Most projects take 2 to 5 days depending on the size and layout of the home. We coordinate the schedule with you in advance and work to minimize disruption to your daily routine.

If your pipes are corroded, failing in multiple locations, or made of polybutylene or lead, yes. Repiping eliminates the root cause of recurring problems, restores water pressure and quality, and protects your home from the water damage that failing pipes cause.

Both are excellent. PEX is more flexible, installs faster, costs less, and resists freeze-thaw damage. Copper has a longer track record and is preferred by some homeowners for resale value. We recommend the best option based on your home and your priorities.

Yes. We use minimally invasive techniques that limit the number and size of wall openings. PEX flexibility helps. We plan the route carefully, use existing access points, and patch everything when we’re done.

Standard homeowners insurance typically does not cover the cost of repiping itself. However, if failing pipes cause water damage, the resulting damage may be covered. We provide documentation for insurance claims when applicable.

Polybutylene pipes are gray, flexible plastic, usually visible at the water heater, under sinks, or where pipes enter the home. If your home was built between the late 1970s and mid-1990s in a Baltimore-area subdivision, there’s a good chance it has Poly-B. We can inspect and confirm.

We serve Harford County, Baltimore County, Baltimore City, Anne Arundel County, and Howard County. Polybutylene and galvanized replacement is especially common in 1980s–90s and pre-1960s homes across the Baltimore metro.
